Formant analysis using different techniques

David M Howard, University of York, UK

The objective of this work is to provide a comparison between existing techniques used for formant analysis of both known signals and for real speech. Previous work has catalogued some of the issues surrounding the choice of speech analysis technique in terms of the potential effects on the results and the intention here is to consider formant analysis techniques and their application to speech analysis. Synthetic vowels and diphthongs in both adult and child, male and female ranges will be created using the Klatt formant synthesiser to enable analysis methods to be compared with known and therefore absolute formant frequencies. Analysis will also be carried out on speech with and without vocal babble. The outcome will be a report and an article detailing the key findings of the work in the context of practical advice to those working in the area.
