Spectral change over time (F1 - F3) of groups of glide and vowel in the Malopolonian Dialect under different conditions

Agata Trawinska, Institute of Forensic Research, Cracow

In forensic case work, different degrees of non-synchronically articulated palatality has been observed. The common expression of non-synchronically articulated palatality in Polish is an appearance of glide /j/. Currently, besides the voiced or voiceless inter-words articulation, non-synchronically pronounced palatality is pointed out as the most salient features connected with regional variety in Polish. So far, no acoustic analysis of palatality has been performed.

Speech material for 12 male speakers of the Malopolonian Dialect, spoken in southeastern part of Poland, will be analysed. From each person, a reading list of words and utterances and repeated utterances including the palatal or palatalised consonants in a phonetically similar context will be collected.

consonant hard ones followed by palatalised/palatal counterparts followed by
words and utterances (read vs. repeated) /a/, /e/, /o/ /ja/, /je/, /jo/

A frame by frame extraction of formants frequencies (F1 - F3) will be undertaken in order to represent the whole contour of formant movement (software STx). The spectral change over time of the groups of vocoids over different speech situations and across speakers will be compared and subjected to statistical analysis.
